Let Food be thy Medicine
and Medicine be thy Food.
What Is Functional Medicine?
Functional medicine is an approach that will focus on identifying and addressing the root cause of a disease. Each differential diagnosis and symptoms may be some of the many contributing to an individual's illness. A diagnosis can be the result of more than one cause. Only treatments that address the right cause will have a lasting benefit beyond just masking the symptoms.
Conventional medicine will treat the disease. For example, if you have high blood pressure and you go to see a conventional physician, then you will likely just get a drug to lower it. There isn’t usually an investigation into what caused your hypertension. Even if there are lifestyle interventions that could help, pharmaceuticals are still the primary treatment. In functional medicine, patients are encouraged to play a more engaged role in treatment. Functional medicine is more about treating the patient instead of just the disease. There is not a one-size-fits-all approach and even patients with the same problem can get different treatment.
